Description

WHY TEACH KIDS ABOUT MAKING MISTAKES?

Download our free What to Do When You Make a Mistake poster! Perfect for teaching kids about building a growth mindset, developing resilience, and making repairs.

Research tells us that building a growth mindset is the surest path to developing the kind of positive self-talk which is foundational for self-efficacy.  In addition to a strong internal locus of control. Having a growth mindset is like having a compass which points to the “next step” when invariable  missteps happen. So instead of giving up,  learning how to deal with mistakes inspires us to get up, get creative, get to Plan-B (or C or D :), get moving, and get growing!

Some of the suggestions and tips for what to do when you make a mistake are:

  • Learn from it.
  • Make amends if you hurt someone else.
  • Forgive yourself.
  • Take responsibility for what you did.
  • Apologize.
  • Breathe, regroup, and try again.
  • Keep things in perspective.

Hang our tips for what to do when you make a mistake infographic in your counseling office, classroom, or even at home.

School counselors and teachers also find our Learning From Mistakes Behavior Reflection Think Sheets and Growth Mindset Card Game helpful resources, too!

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

I use this in both school and outpatient setting. It has been helpful with kids who are struggling with perfectionism and also helping them learn that everyone makes mistakes and it is ok and things that they can do to help stay balanced.

I used this poster as part of my social emotional bulletin board. All of the suggestions are great and I can see my students using them!

I have it pasted in my office, I am a counselor and this helps all the time. It is very attractive at sight and the kids always read and ask. But also it is very helpful to explain and make reflection.
